The explosion occurred on the 3700 block of Miles Avenue around 11:30 p.m., as reported by WTAE. According to residents, the blast coincided with the Pittsburgh Steelers game, which many watched at the time of the incident.
The local emergency services responded promptly, with police, firefighters, and EMS units reaching the scene following the dispatch at 11:40 p.m., as detailed by WPXI. Despite the intensity of the blast, fortunately, no injuries were reported, and no one was taken to the hospital from the scene. Efforts by firefighters and crews from the gas company and the American Red Cross ensured the situation was managed and support provided to the affected residents.
The explosion's aftermath was grim, with one of the apartments destroyed. Authorities, including the gas company People's Gas, were quick to respond, turning off gas in the affected area to prevent further incidents. A spokesperson for People's Gas stressed the seriousness of the situation, "Our crews responded immediately and have turned off gas to the affected area. The safety of the public and our employees is our first priority, and we are working closely with the Allegheny County Fire Marshall and local emergency responders. This is an active situation, and more information will be released as it becomes available," the spokesperson remarked in a statement detailed by WTAE.
Crews remained on the scene into Friday morning to investigate the explosion's cause and ensure the area was safe. The Red Cross was also present to aid the displaced individuals, offering assistance in the wake of the unexpected calamity.
