A standard afternoon turned frantic in Colerain Township when a vehicle veered into a local daycare. The incident occurred around 4:15 p.m. yesterday, as reported by WLWT, and involved the YMCA Early Learning Center located on Colerain Avenue. Witnesses outside on a break from work described hearing children screaming post-impact, a chilling reminder of the vulnerability inherent in places nurturing our youngest citizens.
According to police on the scene, fortunately, there were no injuries reported among the children, a stroke of luck considering the nature of the establishment hit. As relayed by FOX19, the daycare was operational during the crash, with children and staff present but away from harm's reach. The driver of the Honda Civic, which ruptured the daycare's wall, was transported to the hospital with injuries determined not to be life-threatening.
Witnesses Mike Lawson and Nick Munro conveyed the dread of the scene as they rushed towards the chaos. "We ran over and we heard kids screaming inside and this is the worst possible case scenario," Munro told WLWT. His words echoed a communal fear, the thought of one's child in the path of unchecked disaster. A parent, Hope Gausman, shared her relief to WLWT, stating, "It is a miracle, because it was in the middle of the day and parents still have to work and our kids were safe."
Details about the cause of the crash remain scarce as the investigation continues. The magnitude of destruction was evident and described by Local12, a silver Honda Civic had staggered through the wall, leaving behind a demolished barrier that once safeguarded the children within. Thankfully, no employees were hurt in the incident. Colerain Township police continue their work piecing together the events that led to this harrowing close call, a reminder of the fragility that hangs in the balance in places meant to be sanctuaries of learning and growth.
