Financial difficulties, compounded by the looming presence of new condos, have forced the local coffee spot to lock its doors. According to KVUE, owner Josh Brown echoed the sentiments of loss felt by the community, reflecting on the personal connection he, his staff, and the customers all shared. "This is very personal to me because these people are personal to me," Brown told KVUE. The coffee shop, which has been navigating on uncertain month-to-month leases since the land was sold for condo development in 2021, has reached the end of the line as developers push forward with construction plans set for February.
The closure came as a blow not just to caffeine aficionados but also to those who found solace within Genuine Joe's walls. Before the COVID-19 pandemic, the cafe hosted multiple community recovery and support groups every day. "There’s people who wouldn’t be here today if it wasn’t for what they received here," Brown explained in an interview with KVUE.
