A North Lawndale man has been charged in connection to the fatal shooting of his ex-girlfriend and the arson of her West Englewood home in May of last year. According to the Chicago Sun-Times, 37-year-old Joshua Mims is facing charges of first-degree murder and aggravated arson, following the death of 32-year-old Racquel Adams who was found in her home after officers noticed the fire around 12:40 a.m.
Found lying partially on fire and in a pool of blood by officers who entered the burning home, Adams had suffered a fatal gunshot wound to the back of her head. Surveillance footage, as stated by Cook County prosecutors, captured Mr. Mims leaving Adams' residence on the 6400 block of South Damen Avenue late in the evening and returning past midnight, only to exit again shortly before the fire was noticed. After being taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center, Adams was pronounced dead, with a shell casing discovered at the scene lending credence to the allegation of homicide.
As further detailed by prosecutors, the Chicago Fire Department concluded that the blaze was intentionally set, with the identification of open flame ignition in four separate areas within the house. Following a collaborative effort, Mims was apprehended by Chicago police officers and the U.S. Marshals Great Lakes Regional Fugitive Task Force, with his arrest being carried out near South Kedzie Avenue.
In a narrative pierced by tragedy, Raquel Adams, who was a mother of five children, had returned to the home after leaving her children with relatives for the night. "The youngest actually has disabilities and she was so strong-hearted on getting her together and making sure she got her therapy," Adams' sister, Rachelle Adams, lamented in an interview referenced by CBS News. The grief expressed by her sister was palpable, reflecting on milestones that the mother would miss, such as witnessing her oldest go to prom.
In addition to the profound loss felt by her family, Adams was on the cusp of personal triumph, having recently earned her GED with ambitions to open a beauty salon in Little Village. The motive behind Mims' alleged actions remains undisclosed by the police. A court appearance for the accused was set to determine his detention status.
