In the spirit of the holiday season, Northfield police officers Isaac Dahl and Christian Kelling are set to receive commendations for their vigilant efforts in apprehending impaired drivers, setting a commendable example of enforcement within their jurisdiction. By reaching the top of the list with nine DWI arrests each over the past year, these officers are notably contributing to safer roadways, a mission underscored by the Rice County Safe Roads Coalition.
During a recent enforcement campaign kickoff yesterday, part of a wider statewide effort, the two officers were recognized for their standout role, suggesting perhaps that the consistent message of driving sober is resonating within the community, as articulated by Kathy Cooper of the Rice County Safe Roads Coalition in a statement obtained by the Rice County website.
Minnesota has seen over 127,000 incidents of impaired driving during major holidays in the last five years, according to statistics from the Minnesota Department of Public Safety Office of Traffic Safety. With a sobering tally of 664 fatalities and 1,843 serious injuries in crashes involving alcohol between 2019 and 2023, Rice County Sheriff Jesse Thomas reminds the public that "Every DWI crash is preventable. All it takes is planning ahead and choosing not to drive after drinking or using an impairing substance," underscoring the necessity of sober traveling during this festive period.
The scope of impairment extends beyond alcohol, including substances like cannabis, hemp-derived THC edibles, prescription medications, and sleep aids which all have the potential to hinder one's ability to operate a vehicle safely; yet amid these calls for caution, individuals are prompted to consider alternative transport suggestions avoid the dire consequences of a DWI, consequences that can encompass a license suspension for up to a year, hefty fines, and even jail time especially for repeat offenders or those with a high blood alcohol concentration Sheriff Thomas told the Rice County website.
The law enforcement community urges citizens to plan for a safe ride home for each holiday event, voluntarily sign up as a designated driver, take the initiative to prevent an impaired individual from driving, always buckle up, and report any suspected drunk driving.
