Oakland Celebrates Economic Empowerment with Return of Blackout Holiday Market at OakstopSource: Google Street View

The Blackout Holiday Market has returned to Oakland, showcasing resilience and economic empowerment in the community. Held yesterday and today at Oakstop (2323 Broadway), the market features over 40 vendors offering products ranging from clothing to books.

Chris Booker of Hey Carter Books told NBC Bay Area, “You don't see a lot of places where Black creators can come together and to be elevated, and to have people come by and be exposed to the business.” The market also serves as a networking space for creators during challenging times.

Founder Xenia St. Charles emphasized the importance of such events, telling KRON4 that “eight out of 10 Black-owned businesses close in the first 18 months,” a statistic worsened by the pandemic, which saw over 600 Bay Area businesses shuttered permanently.

Attendees like Dominick Gillette highlighted the market’s community impact, saying to NBC Bay Area, “The more dollars you spend, the more that multiplies in the community. The more people are going to share and spend, and help businesses grow.”

The event offers perks such as curated VIP gift bags, free entry for children under 18, and a family-friendly atmosphere. For more details, visit Eventbrite or follow updates on Instagram.
