An off-duty Cleveland police officer, identified as Alexander Sinclair, was detained following a shooting incident at Riverview Elementary School in Painesville Township. As reported by Cleveland19, the school was placed under lockdown yesterday morning when a gunshot was fired in the parking lot. Lake County Sheriff Frank Leonbruno confirmed Sinclair's arrest, clarifying the event started as a domestic dispute off-site and subsequently moved to the school's parking lot.
During the altercation, it is alleged Sinclair fired a single round through the windshield of another vehicle. The FOX 8 I-Team reported that the school's resource officer, a Lake County Sheriff's deputy deputy, approached the scene after hearing the gunfire. "At about 9:10 a.m., Riverview Elementary was placed on lockdown due to a domestic issue that began off-site and then carried into the parking lot of Riverview Elementary," the Riverside Schools told FOX8. Sinclair reportedly dropped his weapon and was detained without further incident.
No students or staff were injured, although a deputy sustained a hand injury, and a woman and child were transported to the hospital as a precaution, FOX8 reports. The lockdown was lifted after one hour, following which normal school activities resumed. Sheriff Leonbruno praised the school resource officer's prompt actions, which he believes prevented the situation from escalating.
The unnamed school resource officer is set to receive a national heroism award from the One In Five Foundation For Kids, a nonprofit established after the Uvalde, Texas, shooting in 2022. According to News 5 Cleveland, the officer's intervention was critical in quickly detaining the suspect and ensuring the safety of everyone involved. The foundation recognized the challenges the officers overcame to protect the school community diligently.
