A recent incident has left the Georgia State University community shaken as one student has been arrested and police continue the search for two men after an armed robbery inside a campus dormitory. The confrontation occurred on October 30 at the Piedmont Central dormitory and was reportedly over a hoodie. A GSU student accused another student of theft, which escalated into the calling of two outside men to aid in retrieving the item, leading to robbery and possibly an assault, according to FOX 5 Atlanta.
GSU police have stated that one of the alleged victims in the incident had prior disputes with the arrested student. "I live here, so it's like to think that somebody could come in as easily as that and rob somebody," GSU student Taylor Palmore told FOX 5 Atlanta. This sentiment reflects broader student concerns about safety and communication protocols on campus especially after learning about the incident from the news media, instead of direct notification from the university.
While the arrested student's identity remains undisclosed due to the ongoing investigation, WSBTV reports that the two male suspects were last seen driving away in a black Toyota Camry and have been identified, although they are not in custody as of late Monday. The two victims of the robbery sustained minor injuries but are expected to fully recover.
The university has described the frightening incident as an "isolated issue" and continues to reassure students of their safety on campus property. Despite the reassurances, the lapse in direct notification about the crime has prompted calls for changes in policy. "I wish they notified us because stuff like that can be very scary, especially to me and like parents," GSU student Charliza Faulkner told FOX 5 Atlanta. GSU police explained they did not send out immediate notifications because the incident was reported two hours after occurring, and the individuals involved had already left the campus.
Conversations on campus indicate a heightened awareness and a renewed vigilance amongst students. "I'm going to be more careful about who walks in for sure," GSU student Lita Volk said in a statement to WSBTV. As the investigation continues, students are left hoping for transparency and enhanced security measures to prevent such an incident from recurring.
