A fire in Cornelius on Wednesday night, just before 7 p.m., resulted in one death. The Cornelius Fire Department responded quickly to the scene on S Alpine Street, but there were no working smoke alarms in the building, as reported by KOIN.
After extinguishing the fire, first responders found the victim, who had died in the blaze. The outbuilding was destroyed, and the victim was pronounced dead at the scene, according to KPTV.
Joint fire investigation teams from Forest Grove Fire & Rescue and the Washington County Sheriff's Office are working to determine the cause of the fire. The identity of the victim has not been released as officials continue their investigation. Forest Grove Fire & Rescue stated, "We extend our sincere condolences to the family and friends of the individual that lost their life," and emphasized the importance of safety measures like working smoke alarms to prevent such tragedies. Hillsboro Fire & Rescue, Gaston Fire District, and other local agencies assisted at the scene, as stated by KGW.
