Orlando Community Mourns as Victims of Downtown Mass Shooting Identified, Teen Suspected of First-Degree MurderSource: Orlando Police Department

The Orlando Police Department has released the names of the two young men who were the fatalities of a mass shooting that disrupted downtown Orlando's Halloween festivities. According to FOX 35 Orlando, the individuals were 25-year-old Tyrek Hill and 19-year-old Timothy Schmidt Jr. The latter was recognized as a freshman at the University of Central Florida. A GoFundMe campaign set up in his memory described Schmidt Jr. as an "extraordinary person, loving son, caring friend, talented soccer player, astounding teammate, kind soul, hardworking student and individual with an extremely warm heart and a witty sense of humor." The campaign has already amassed over $40,000.

According to ClickOrlando, the police apprehended 17-year-old Jaylen Dwayne Edgar about the incident, who is facing charges of first-degree murder and attempted murder. Although he is currently in juvenile detention, there is a possibility he could be tried as an adult. Edgar waived his right to appear in his initial court hearing on Saturday. His mother and a public defender were present in court in his stead.

On the night of the violence, downtown Orlando was congested with thousands of locked-in festivities. At approximately 1:07 a.m., chaos erupted as gunfire began at the intersection of Orange Avenue and Central Blvd. The suspect continued his rampage minutes later near Orange Avenue and Washington Street, close to where a group of Orlando Police officers was positioned. Surveillance and body camera footage captured the chaotic scene and the immediate response by authorities. This marks the second mass shooting in downtown Orlando since 2022, as per reports by local news outlets.
