Residents in Orlando should brace themselves for a windy and wet week ahead as Tropical Storm Rafael makes its presence known. According to the latest information from the National Weather Service Melbourne, FL, Rafael is set to remain west of the Florida peninsula but will still significantly impact local weather. Gusts peaking between 25-30 mph are anticipated, with even higher gusts along the coast. Showers are expected to increase in coverage, and thunderstorms could accompany this weather pattern.
The weather service warns that the downpour is not the only concern as Rafael strengthens into a Category One hurricane—it's also the hazardous beach and marine conditions. Keeping a high risk of life-threatening rip currents at all central Florida Atlantic beaches, the sea does not invite but threatens. The surf is projected to build with large breaking waves, exacerbating the situation and potentially dangerous for beachgoers and small craft operators.
Moving inland, the tropical moisture from Rafael will make Florida's muggy heat even more oppressive. "High temperatures continue to be above seasonal values, mostly in the mid 80s," says the National Weather Service's weather forecast. The heat index values are expected to soar, ranging from the low to mid 90s and touching the upper 90s near areas like Lake Okeechobee.
In terms of navigation, aviators will need to heed caution. The weather forecast discussion indicates that ERLY winds will be near 10 knots shortly after sunrise this morning, with gustier conditions persisting. Winds remain elevated this evening, 12-17 kts over the interior, with higher gusts and breezy/windy across coastal TAF sites. Mariners are also advised to observe the Small Craft Advisory that remains in effect until Thursday for most local waters. Travelers and transporters traversing by air or sea will need to plan accordingly during these turbulent conditions.
