A man in his mid-30s was struck and killed by an SUV while attempting to cross New Berlin Road in the Oceanway neighborhood of Jacksonville last night, authorities reported.
The incident occurred around 8 p.m., and despite the efforts to save him, the man died at the scene, News4Jax detailed in their coverage. The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office stated that the man "darted out" to cross the road when the eastbound SUV collided with him, there was no immediate evidence that the driver, who remained and cooperated with law enforcement, was impaired at the time of the crash.
According to a report by First Coast News, the sheriff's office also indicated that the man was not utilizing a crosswalk at the time he attempted to cross the busy street.
This tragic event marks the 127th traffic fatality in Duval County for the year, the 35th involving a pedestrian, as noted by an article from Action News Jax. Investigators handling the case have not suggested that speed was a factor in the incident, witnessing the SUV striking the victim as he ran into the street, the Action News Jax report included.
