In Pembroke Park, Florida, just before Thanksgiving, a turkey named Tom received a special pardon. During a ceremony at town hall, Mayor Ashira Mohammed and the town council spared Tom from becoming dinner in what’s set to be an annual tradition. The event included a mock trial where Tom was accused of trying to avoid being the main dish. With the crowd’s support, a jury declared him not guilty, and he was granted clemency.
The town celebrated Tom's pardon with humor and community spirit, similar to the presidential turkey pardoning tradition. Tom will now live peacefully at The Little Farm, where a mate is waiting for him. "The rest of his life, he will be at the Little Farm with his mate. He has a girlfriend at the farm waiting for him, and hopefully in the near future, we have little baby poults," Aron Alvarez of The Little Farm told WSVN.
Over in Pembroke Park, the act of pardoning Tom drew more than just local attention. Vice Mayor Erik Morrissette highlighted the festive event's aim to bring residents together. "Thanksgiving is a great day to be an American, but isn’t ideal to be a turkey. In Pembroke Park, we thought it would be fitting to ensure Tom the Turkey gets to enjoy the day as much as the rest of us,” Morrissette said in a statement captured by Florida Politics.
The pardoning coincides with a similar event at the national level, where President Joe Biden also granted clemency to two turkeys in a White House ceremony. Additionally, he took the moment to reflect on his tenure and the broader blessings of American life, emphasizing family and perseverance. "May we use this moment to take time from our busy lives and focus on what matters most: our families," Biden said, according to a Florida Politics interview.
