In a bid to spread some early holiday cheer, Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport - known as America's Friendliest Airport® - has announced the return of the "12 Days of Gratitude" initiative, set to start this month. The program aims to give a warm welcome and show of thanks to the many passengers passing through the airport in the lead-up to the Thanksgiving holiday, which traditionally marks one of Sky Harbor's busiest travel times.
The series of celebrations are slated to begin on November 19, earlier than in past years ostensibly to capture the Thanksgiving crowd. Over a 12-day period, flyers can engage in various activities across the airport's terminals, such as spinning a prize wheel, taking photos with the airport's mascot Amelia the Airplane, or trying their hand at making personalized buttons.
A detailed schedule of events published by Phoenix's official newsroom indicates that there's a mix of morning and afternoon activities. For instance, on November 19, travelers can visit Terminal 4 between 10 a.m. and 12 p.m. for a chance to "Spin the wheel for a chance to win a prize" - a simple yet engaging opportunity to win something extra during their travel experience.
Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport encourages participants to share their experiences on social media using the hashtag #12DaysofGratitude for a chance to win additional prizes. Prizes, activities, and, the exact locations are laid out in the original press release, but it's noted that "Times and locations are subject to change." Giving travelers a heads-up and the opportunity to connect virtually, these interactive events create an experience beyond the typical hustle and bustle of holiday travel.
Phoenix Sky Harbor plays a significant role in the local economy, contributing over $44 billion annually, and sees, on an average day, more than 1,000 aircraft and over 130,000 passengers. It is also worth noting that the airport operates without the use of tax dollars, being entirely funded through airport revenue. Travelers eager for a break from the travel routine or those simply looking for a pleasant surprise might find the "12 Days of Gratitude" a welcome addition to their airport itinerary this season.
