Montgomery County officials are piecing together the details of a harrowing incident that unfolded at a Plymouth Township music store over the weekend. According to NBC Philadelphia, a woman, whose identity remains undisclosed due to the nature of the event, pointed a loaded gun at shoppers and staff inside the Guitar Center at the Metroplex Shopping Center. The situation sparked immense fear as some sought refuge by hiding inside the store and others ran outside, trying to reach safety.
Responding to the 911 call at around 1:59 p.m. on Saturday, Plymouth Township Police arrived to find the woman exiting the retail outlet with the firearm. Despite the officers' repeated commands, she pointed the gun at them several times, reported by Daily Voice Lower Paxton. In a testament to their training and composure, the police successfully de-escalated the situation. As shown in bodycam footage released by the department, the woman eventually laid down on the pavement, placing the gun next to her and allowing officers to apprehend her without further incident.
The arrest occurred after a stand-off where the woman did not immediately heed the police's orders to drop the weapon. Officers took the woman into custody, who appeared "emotionally disturbed," as noted by Detective Sergeant Chris Schwartz in a statement collected by FOX 29 News. The police also retrieved a .38 caliber Smith & Wesson handgun at the scene, which was loaded with eight rounds, including one chambered round.
This incident raises imperative questions about the intersection of mental health and firearm possession. As a regular customer and former psychiatric social worker, Gerry Clark pointed out to FOX 29 News, "It’s nice to know the police, the stores’ staff seemed to know how to handle it effectively." He expressed concern over gun control and the risks particularly in the hands of individuals with mental illness. The suspect was taken to Montgomery County Emergency Services for evaluation, and charges including aggravated assault have been filed against her.
The Plymouth Township Police Department, assisted by the Whitemarsh Police Department and Plymouth Community Ambulance Association, has called for anyone with cell phone video of the event to come forward. Detective Sergeant Chris Schwartz has asked anyone with information to contact the Plymouth Township Police Department at 610-279-1901, echoing the department's pride in their officers' restraint and skillful handling of the encounter as indicated by Daily Voice Lower Paxton.
