Port St. Lucie Police arrested 18-year-old Omarion Ivory, who is suspected of being close to becoming a serial killer. He faces charges in the death of 67-year-old Francis Gennace last month and was found with a hammer believed to have been used in the attack. Gennace's body was discovered four days later, following a report from his employer about his absence from work, according to WSVN.
Assistant Police Chief Leo Niemczyk called the murder highly unusual for the area, noting that Ivory had no known connection to Gennace and may have been planning another random homicide. Ivory was arrested on September 20 after police reviewed surveillance footage linking him to an attempted break-in. In the video, he was seen taking a hammer from his backpack, knocking on a door, and leaving when there was no response, according to WPBF.
"Correct. That's why this is so alarming," Niemczyk told a WSVN News reporter when asked if Ivory had been roaming the city with intentions to kill again. Evidence from the investigation suggests that the hammer used in Gennace's deadly assault still had his blood on it when police arrested Ivory.
The suspect, who has a juvenile arrest record and multiple mental health evaluations, has been charged with first-degree premeditated murder and armed burglary with battery. Local resident Mortie Butler said to WPBF, "This is really scary for us."
Ivory's family shared with authorities that he suffers from paranoid schizophrenia and had been involuntarily committed for psychiatric evaluation previously, under the Baker Act. While in custody, Ivory, who has not given a statement to the police since his arrest, continues to be held without bond in the St. Lucie County Jail.
