Racist graffiti, including a slur targeting Black individuals, marred the walls of Worcester Dual Language Magnet School, inciting reactions from local parents and the Worcester NAACP. In an email shared by MassLive, Principal Suzanna Resendes conveyed the unsettling discovery of the vandalism on the school's premises, stating its examination is in progress by the Worcester Police Department.
According to Telegram.com, Joe Cersosimo, Worcester Police Department's communications specialist, outlined the timeline of events, where officers were called to the school's locale at approximately 11:35 AM yesterday and the responding officers found not just a racial slur but also a satanic symbol spray-painted, a testimony to the vile sentiment expressed against the school which prides itself on inclusivity. The response from the school district was swift with the graffiti painted over before school resumed Monday morning.
The school, serving as a convergence of Chandler Magnet School and La Familia Dual Language School, represents a rich tapestry of diverse backgrounds—87% of its students identify as non-white. Resendes reassured in a letter to parents that the school was dedicated to maintaining an environment that fosters a sense of belonging for all students, as gathered by a statement in MassLive.
Reacting to the incident, the Worcester NAACP described the affront as both deeply racist and emblematic of broader societal issues, while Lashana Fulton, a parent of two students at the afflicted school, voiced her distress and acknowledged the bitter familiarity with racism in an interview with Telegram.com, said that the leadership and culture within the school remained untouched.
