Raleigh residents and visitors can look forward to a more accessible downtown experience as the city rolls out a new free parking initiative, launching this Friday. According to a recent announcement from Raleigh's Transportation Department, several city-owned parking decks will offer a two-hour gratis period to boost local commerce and patronage of the downtown area.
The pilot program, described by Transportation Assistant Director Kenneth Ritchie as a move to enhance downtown Raleigh's allure, targets an infusion of foot traffic to benefit restaurants, shops, and businesses, Ritchie emphasized the city's intent by stating, “We have a vibrant downtown and we want everyone to enjoy it," and he went on to express his hope that “the two-hour free parking pilot will help bring more people downtown.” The initiative spans from November to February 2025, after which the city will evaluate its effectiveness on both parking availability and the downtown bustle.
Participating in this two-hour reprieve from parking fees are several decks including Blount Street Deck, City Center Deck, Moore Square Deck, the Municipal Building Deck, and the Wilmington Street Station Deck; once the complimentary window closes, standard rates resume.
