Rapper YNW Melly, behind bars on charges of murdering two of his childhood friends, is now reportedly suing the Broward Sheriff's Office for what he deems 'cruel' treatment. In documents filed by his attorney Michael Pizzi Jr., Melly, whose legal name is Jamell Demons, is alleging violations of multiple constitutional amendments and seeking his release from prison, as per a lawsuit detailed by NBC Miami.
The lawsuit claims that Demons has been unable to see or speak with any family members for three years. Efforts to secure a trial date have faced continuous delays. His legal team argues that the Broward Sheriff's Office has imposed unreasonable restrictions that hinder their ability to consult with him and prepare his defense.
The allegations of "debilitating isolation" against Demons are serious and could affect the rapper's mental health and well-being. The Miami Herald reports that the lawsuit claims authorities are holding Demons in ways that violate the First, Fifth, Sixth, Eighth, and Fourteenth Amendments of the U.S. Constitution.
A previous trial for the double murder charge against Melly ended in mistrial last summer, adding to his legal challenges. Currently, a new trial date is set for September 10, 2025, with a pretrial meeting scheduled for December 5, according to NBC Miami. Due to these delays, his legal team is strongly advocating for his immediate release, arguing that "His cruel treatment by the Broward Detention authorities warrants his immediate release from pretrial detention since the detaining authorities have shown such a callous disregard for his human dignity Right to Counsel," as stated in the lawsuit.
