In a landmark move, the Redmond Police Department is the first in Washington State to receive FAA approval to operate drones beyond the pilot's visual line of sight without a visual observer. This waiver supports their Drones as First Responders (DFR) program, as reported by Redmond Washington.
Previously, FAA rules required a physical observer to monitor all drone flights and ensure compliance. Redmond PD's new capability to operate drones beyond visual line of sight is the result of over a year of rigorous testing, research, and collaboration with the FAA and DFR platform developers, as mentioned in a recent announcement.
Chief Darrell Lowe sees this as more than just a tech upgrade, it's a leap forward for the community's well-being. “As a premier law enforcement agency, this approval exemplifies our commitment to leveraging advanced and innovative technology to protect our community,” Lowe was quoted saying in the official release. This isn't just a pat on the back for the Redmond PD—setting a new benchmark for drone programs is one thing, but the real win according to Lowe is “a monumental step toward improving response times and enhancing public safety, efficiency, and potential applications.”
