A Mexican man with prior convictions for driving under the influence, one of which resulted in a fatality, was handed a 15-year federal prison term for illegal re-entry into the United States. Guadalupe Gerardo Reyes-Gonzalez received his sentence following an admission of guilt earlier this year. His sentence was decreed by U.S. District Judge Ada Brown, as announced by U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Texas Leigha Simonton.
Reyes-Gonzalez's 1997 conviction for intoxicated manslaughter stemmed from an incident in which the vehicle he was driving struck a pedestrian, inflicting fatal head trauma. His blood alcohol content registered at 0.15, nearly double the permissible legal limit. Following an eight-year sentence and subsequent deportation, Reyes-Gonzalez unlawfully re-entered the U.S. on multiple occasions. His most recent drunk driving incident occurred in 2021, which led to a brief three-day jail term.
In response to the sentencing, Judge Brown expressed a resolve to protect public safety, referencing Reyes-Gonzalez's previous offenses. "The defendant had already killed one U.S. citizen," Judge Brown observed during the hearing, highlighting the gravity of his previous actions and the need for a severe sentence, as per the U.S. Department of Justice.
An investigation by U.S. Immigration & Customs Enforcement, in cooperation with the Mesquite Police Department, led to Reyes-Gonzalez's most recent arrest. Assistant U.S. Attorney Walt Junker was responsible for the prosecution of the case. Reyes-Gonzalez's record of repeated illegal entries following deportations and his criminal history were key factors in the court's decision to impose a lengthier prison term than usual for such violations.
Further details regarding the case were provided by Erin Dooley, Press Officer for the U.S. Attorney's Office, Northern District of Texas. Information regarding the incident and the subsequent sentencing can be accessed through the website of the U.S. Attorney's Office, reinforcing the finality of the legal proceedings for Reyes-Gonzalez.
