Tragedy struck early on a Sacramento County street yesterday morning when a man in a wheelchair was fatally hit by a vehicle. The California Highway Patrol (CHP) reported the incident occurred at the intersection of Watt Avenue and Roseville Road in North Highlands at around 5:29 a.m. The victim, a man in his late 20s, was navigating through the area when the collision happened. His identity has not been released to the public while next of kin are notified.
According to details provided by KCRA, the driver, identified as a man in his late 40s, remained at the scene, cooperating with law enforcement officials. The CHP confirmed that the driver was not under the influence at the time of the accident. While the investigation was ongoing, the driver insisting on not being under the influence of any intoxicating substances, reassuring authorities at the scene.
Further information from a Sacramento Bee report states that the man in the wheelchair was transported to the hospital with major injuries and was later pronounced dead.
Officer Justin Fetterly, a spokesman for the CHP’s North Sacramento office, said the driver was heading south on Watt Avenue just north of Roseville Road when he collided with the pedestrian in the wheelchair. Fetterly mentioned that the circumstances leading to the collision and the reasons why the pedestrian was in the traffic lane remain under investigation. While comforting the public, he emphasized that no drugs or alcohol are suspected in relation to the unfortunate event. The investigation is still active as officials work to piece together this somber puzzle and prevent such incidents in the future.
