An armed man was fatally shot by Sacramento County Sheriff's deputies after he escalated a personal conflict to a violent standoff that ended on the rooftop of a Carmichael home, authorities say. The incident began late yesterday when the man reportedly fired a gun inside the apartment he shared with two roommates on Moraga Drive, which prompted a response from local law enforcement. According to abc10, after firing the shot and allegedly threatening a roommate, the man, followed by a dog, fled the scene, leading to an immediate search.
After deputies set up a perimeter, the suspect was located at the corner of Hillhurst Drive and Ashfield Way. Deputies observed the man as he climbed onto a house's roof, initiating an hour-long negotiation in an attempt to bring the situation to a peaceful resolution. "He fired shots at the deputies from the roof before deputies returned fire killing him," Sgt. Amar Gandhi of the Sacramento Sheriff's Office stated in comments obtained by abc10.
A KCRA 3 video later confirmed that the same individual was seen in a backyard holding what seemed to be a firearm. As reported by KCRA, the sheriff's office confirmed that the man in the video is the same individual who was killed in the shooting.
The Sacramento Sheriff's Office has not yet released the identity of the 24-year-old man. In accordance with protocol, an investigation into the officer-involved shooting is underway to determine the details of the incident. The man's family is being notified, and further information will be shared as the investigation continues.
