A Sacramento man faces homicide charges in the wake of a fentanyl poisoning incident, marking a grim first for the county's enforcement efforts against the opioid crisis. The Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office announced via Facebook post the arrest of 25-year-old Luke Eckes following the August 17, fentanyl-related death of a local resident who thought they were purchasing recreational drugs, but instead fell victim to a fatal dose of the synthetic opioid.
The Sheriff's Special Investigations Bureau, in collaboration with a DEA Fentanyl Overdose Response Team detective, uncovered evidence that connected Eckes to the sale of the fentanyl-laced drugs taken by the deceased the County's intensifying crackdown on fentanyl, a substance ravaging communities with its lethal potency, led them to Eckes' doorstep, where they uncovered more pills at his residence which are commonly mixed with the narcotic. In a statement, the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office shared that Eckes was not only acquainted with the victim but also conceded to selling them fentanyl and additionally confessed to a personal overdose scare with the same substances just days before the fatality occurred.
With the suspect now behind bars and awaiting a December 19 court date, the department is taking a firm stand on its position with Sheriff Jim Cooper asserting, "I am proud our Detectives have reached this major milestone in its fight against the devastating impact of fentanyl poisoning in our community, marking a significant step in holding those who distribute this deadly drug accountable."
