It's been a long legal battle for the City of Saint Paul, but the future of the Hamline Midway Library looks bright following a recent court victory. After 16 months of litigation halting their plans, city officials have been given the green light to proceed with the construction of a new library on the existing location, with the project previously set to begin in fall 2023, according to the City of Saint Paul. Judge of the Second Judicial District Court asserted that the move could go ahead, marking the end of a contentious chapter for the local community and authorities.
The existing Hamline Midway Library forms part of Saint Paul Public Library's "Transforming Libraries" initiative, which aims to overhaul three libraries in total, as per the City of Saint Paul. Court filings reveal that extensive community engagement and analysis underpinned the decision to rebuild Hamline Midway Library to meet the accessibility and safety standards expected by today and future generations. The project faced a significant roadblock when a lawsuit seeking to preserve the old building was lodged, but that obstacle has now been surmounted.
In a statement made by the official City of Saint Paul website, Mayor Melvin Carter expressed his satisfaction with the court's ruling, "I applaud this decision and look forward to finally fulfilling our promise of an accessible, safe, and modern public library that all of our Hamline-Midway families can enjoy." Similarly, Council President Mitra Jalali commended the decision, stating, "The Midway deserves major city investment in vibrant public spaces for the future of our diverse community.” Mitra Jalali added, “I am thrilled that the Hamline-Midway Library will be rebuilt to better serve our neighborhood. This is a victory for all our residents.”
With the legal barriers gone, the city will now engage with its construction partners to kick off the building process. According to the project timeline, the new Hamline Midway Library construction is anticipated to wrap up within 18 months. Residents and interested parties can keep abreast of the project's progress by visiting the Saint Paul Public Library website for updates.
