San Antonio is on track to see improved energy affordability and a bolstering of its infrastructure resilience. In a session held last Tuesday, November 19, Councilmember Melissa Cabello Havrda discussed the city's financial approach aimed at backing CPS Energy's ability to offer sustainable and reliable services. As reported by the city's official website, a significant share of the city's revenues from off-system energy sales, amounting to $46 million, maybe reinvested into the utility's infrastructure.
Councilmember Havrda, as highlighted in her proposal, has been a proponent of returning a portion of the city's energy revenue back into the system - a strategy designed to alleviate the fiscal pressures on San Antonio's households. “When I first proposed the 2 percent return policy, the goal was clear: to provide CPS Energy with the resources it needs to strengthen our infrastructure while easing the financial burden on our residents,” said Councilmember Havrda. According to the proposal, $26 million of the accrued $46 million is eyed for infrastructure improvements that could make a dent in future energy rate hikes, according to the city's official website.
"San Antonio residents should never have to choose between paying their rent and keeping the lights on," Councilmember Havrda elucidated. She emphasized the council's commitment to taking steps that prioritize affordability while proactively laying the groundwork for future challenges, as noted by the same news release.
