The San Antonio City Council has updated the city's smoking ordinance to include Electronic Smoking Devices in areas where traditional smoking is prohibited. According to the City of San Antonio, this ordinance will take effect on January 1, 2025, and aims to meet modern smoke-free standards and improve local air quality.
The amendments, supported by Metro Health, update Chapter 36 of the Municipal Code, which covers smoking regulations in San Antonio. The changes recognize Electronic Smoking Devices, or vapes and e-cigarettes, as part of the definition of smoking to align with public health best practices. Dr. Claude A. Jacob, Metro Health Director, said, "This update reflects our commitment as the community health strategist and ensures that policies remain relevant to current circumstances, adapt to technological changes, and mitigate potential risks," as stated by the City of San Antonio.
The changes update Sections 36-1 and 36-10 of the code, including Electronic Smoking Device in the smoking definition and requiring their illustration on signage. Local businesses and residents should understand the ordinance before it takes effect next year. City officials encourage the community to learn how to report violations. Dr. Jacob stated, “By reducing exposure to secondhand smoke and promoting smoke-free environments, we are taking significant steps to protect the health of our citizens.” For more details, the City of San Antonio provides resources on their official website.
