On November 7, an incident on San Antonio's South Side led to a police officer shooting a suspect after a vehicle chase. The San Antonio Police Department has released bodycam footage of Officer Oscar Espino engaging with 42-year-old Raul Ramirez, the suspect in question, as reported by KSAT. The chase came to an end around 12:15 a.m. at the intersection of Padre Drive and Napier Avenue when Ramirez allegedly pointed a gun at Officer Espino after being stopped for a traffic violation.
The situation began when Espino, who noticed a traffic violation committed by Ramirez, attempted to initiate a stop. Having been involved in an earlier incident with officers, Ramirez's vehicle was already marked, according to KENS 5, which was recognized by Officer Espino at the intersection of South Presa and South East Military Drive. When Ramirez accelerated in an attempt to flee, the chase ensued, leading to the aforementioned confrontation.
Officer Espino, faced with the immediate threat as Ramirez pointed a gun at him, discharged his service weapon, striking Ramirez in the shoulder. "He struck the individual in the shoulder. The individual does have a police record and he is a documented gang member," remarked Police Chief William McManus in an interview covered by KENS 5. Life-saving measures were administered by officers on the scene, and Ramirez was taken to a local hospital with a non-life-threatening wound.
Ramirez was subsequently arrested and charged with aggravated assault of a peace officer and felon in possession of a firearm, as was found on him by the officers, a gun. Officer Espino, a two-year veteran of the San Antonio Police Department, was unharmed in the shooting. The department assured that the investigation is ongoing and details may be subject to change.
