The San Diego International Airport's dedication to sustainability has earned it significant recognition, snagging the Envision Gold Award for its New T1 Airside Improvements Project. The Institute for Sustainable Infrastructure (ISI) honored the project for its integration of sustainable practices designed to significantly reduce aircraft emissions by decreasing taxiing times, according to a San Diego International Airport report yesterday.

The improvements, encompassing a new taxiway and more efficient lighting and signage, are lauded not only for their environmental benefits but also for the add-on of an underground water cistern capable of storing 0.9 million gallons. This cistern is expected to slash stormwater runoff into the San Diego Bay by no less than 80%, showing SAN's prioritization of eco-conscious strategies. “Receiving the Envision Gold Award for our Airside Improvements Project is truly an honor. Being good environmental stewards is a priority for us at SAN and by following the Envision sustainability framework, we were able to ensure that sustainable and innovative practices were integrated throughout our design and construction,” Kimberly Becker, President and CEO of the San Diego County Regional Airport Authority, stated through SAN

Notably, the Envision framework hinges on 64 resiliency and sustainability indicators or credits. SAN has been proactive in its implementation, collaborating closely with stakeholders and environmental and construction partners from the early planning stages. The goal is to minimize construction waste and protect the ecological integrity surrounding the project's periphery.
