San Francisco County Transportation Authority Celebrates 35 Years of Progress, Eyes Future with Prop L InitiativesSource: Google Street View

In marking its 35-year milestone since San Francisco voters paved the way for notable transportation advancements, the San Francisco County Transportation Authority has reflected on the legacy and future of the city's transit infrastructure. It was back in 1989, with the approval of Proposition B, when the city enacted the first half-cent transportation sales tax expenditure plan. This action led to the establishment of the authority and management funds by the Board of Supervisors, as noted in a recent report by the San Francisco County Transportation Authority.

Proposition L, the latest voter-backed initiative from November 2022, further extends the tax for another 30 years, prioritizing a slew of projects valued at $2.4 billion. This plan, structured by a collective committee of 27, is expected to amplify billions from federal, state, and other local financial sources, aims to realize the conception of 'The Portal', a downtown extension for Caltrain, improve Muni and BART conditions and a host of other enhancements as per the information provided on the Transportation Authority's website.

These improvements, under Prop L, cover various areas such as road restoration, upgraded traffic signals, creation of bicycle lanes, betterment of transit systems like the electrification of Muni’s bus fleet, and support for paratransit services amongst many, all directed towards amplifying safety, reliability, and accessibility across every district, especially in Equity Priority Communities. During the 35-year tenure of the Transportation Authority, more than $3.2 billion in half-cent sales tax funding has been allocated to projects of varying scales, from traffic signal updates to significant undertakings like the Salesforce Transit Center, contributing to an annual generation of roughly $110 million and enabling, on average, the leveraging of each dollar of local sales tax by $4 to $7 in other funding sources.

Commemorating the anniversary and the sustained public support, Transportation Authority Board Chair Rafael Mandelman expressed gratitude, saying, as per the San Francisco County Transportation Authority, "We celebrate this special anniversary with San Francisco voters and thank them for entrusting us with stewardship of the half-cent sales tax program and other public funds we manage." Tilly Chang, the Executive Director of the Transportation Authority.
