As the City of San Luis tackles the challenges of its growing population, the fire department has made a significant move to bolster its emergency response capabilities. In an effort to address an uptick in emergencies, the San Luis Fire Department enrolled eight of its firefighters into the Arizona Western Entrepreneurial College’s Paramedic Academy, heeding the call for advanced medical support within the community.
During the intense ten-month program, these firefighters committed to approximately 960 lecture hours and at least 200 clinical hours, a commitment that came alongside their ongoing duties as first responders. The balance between education and service, however, did not deter from their dedication, as they juggled rigorous studies, and front-line work in a tireless display of service to their community.
The fruits of their labor culminated on October 28, 2024, when all eight firefighters officially graduated from the academy. According to the City of San Luis, the graduates are Beatrice Ortiz, Rhiordan Pope, Mitchell Grew, Eric Sanchez, Mark Rivera Jr, Salvador Estrada, Martin Piñon, and Victor Navarrete. With the addition of these newly certified paramedics, the fire department has significantly enhanced its ability to respond to medical emergencies.
This achievement comes at a crucial time for San Luis – a burgeoning city where the demands for emergency medical services are on the rise. The newly-minted paramedics stand ready to blend their firefighting prowess with medical expertise, providing a dual role that could potentially save more lives. In the words of the city’s statement, "These additional firefighters who are certified as paramedics will enhance the City of San Luis Fire Department's ability to continue providing critical and needed service."
