Seattle Parks and Recreation (SPR) is reaching out to the community for feedback on the Green Lake Integrated Aquatic Vegetation Management Plan. According to a post on Parkways Seattle, the second public meeting is scheduled for November 20, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at the Hearthstone at Green Lake Chapel, located at 6720 E Green Lake Way N, Seattle, WA 98103.
At this upcoming meeting, community members will have the chance to quickly review and discuss the draft plan with the project team, which outlines key elements and future steps for managing invasive aquatic plants like Eurasian watermilfoil and Brazilian elodea that have been present in the lake since the 1980s. SPR has been working with a group of stakeholders, including state, county, and local aquatic resources staff, to craft this management strategy effectively.
The presence of invasive species like Myriophyllum spicatum and Egeria densa has prompted SPR to actively manage the vegetation in Green Lake for decades. The main goal of this integrated plan is to balance the health of the lake's ecosystem with recreational and community use. Community involvement is seen as vital to the success of this plan, ensuring it reflects the values and needs of those who use the lake and its surroundings.
The final version of the Integrated Aquatic Vegetation Management Plan is set to be completed and made available to the public by the end of 2024. The meeting offers an opportunity for residents to shape the future of Green Lake’s management, potentially influencing strategies to more sustainably balance both ecological integrity and recreational opportunities.
