On September 4, in a case that has shaken the community, 18-year-old Jelani Jackson was killed in a drive-by shooting on Clinton Avenue in Lancaster, South Carolina. Months of investigation have led to a second arrest in the murder case. According to WBTV, Lamonta Roberts, a 31-year-old Lancaster man, was apprehended on November 20 in Richland County, facing charges of murder, possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime, and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.
Lamonta Roberts, now held at the Lancaster County Detention Center, has also been implicated in federal probation violation. The arrest follows the earlier apprehension of 19-year-old Kenyan Blair, who is accused in the same case. Blair, housed in jail on unrelated charges at the time, has been in custody since September. Details from QC News state that both he and Roberts are suspected of orchestrating Jackson's killing.
As the investigation unfolded, authorities learned that the incident was part of a larger series of gang-related retaliatory shootings that rattled the Lancaster area in early September. The WSOC-TV report indicates there were six shootings within a week of Jackson's murder, believed to have been acts of retribution. Federal agencies, including the FBI and the ATF, are now involved, contributing to a $20,000 reward for information that leads to arrests and convictions in these violent outbreaks.
Lancaster Police Department and both the Sheriff's Office and Special Operations Unit urge the public to come forward with any relevant information. The anonymous tip line remains open, as authorities hope to piece together the labyrinthine trail of violence that has claimed young lives and eroded the sense of safety within the community. In a statement to QC News, they stressed the importance of community assistance in solving this crime and potentially preventing future tragedies.
