Semi-Truck Snags Wires in Kailua Causing Damage and Disrupting TrafficSource: Google Street View

A semi-truck caused significant disruption on Kailua Road yesterday when it snagged overhead wires while turning onto Uluoa Street. The incident knocked down seven utility poles, with one landing on a nearby house, damaging the roof and gutters. The crash also affected traffic and nearby property, as per Island News.

Following the incident, repair efforts were quickly mobilized. Hawaiian Telcom confirmed, as reported by Hawaii News Now, that the accident pulled down its lines along with six poles between Ulukahiki and Uluoa streets. The recovery operation necessitated the temporary closure of the Kailua-bound lanes, but traffic was partially restored when the left lane reopened at 4:30 p.m. However, to facilitate overnight repairs, further closures were planned, potentially impacting services for the Kailua, Waimanalo, and Hawaii Kai customers.

Rheanna Stancil-Williams, whose home suffered damage in the mishap, recounted the fortunate timing of the incident. "We were actually just coming home from Windward Mall, and as we were coming up Kailua Road, we noticed the poles down by the park. And then as we passed, we noticed the pole on our house," Stancil-Williams told Hawaii News Now. "We didn’t experience the impact while being home, so we’re very fortunate," she added.

The truck involved is owned by Island Distributing, part of Reyes Beverage Group, and was hauling a Pasha container. The company issued a statement expressing relief that the incident did not cause harm to individuals, as reported by Hawaii News Now: "We are aware of an incident that took place earlier today in Oahu involving one of our trucks. We are thankful no one was injured and are working closely with local authorities to investigate the matter. We will take appropriate action based on our findings." Authorities are further looking into the event to understand the series of failures that led to the large-scale damage and disruption.
