A South Florida businessman, David Knezevich, is now facing a slew of charges including murder after his estranged wife, Ana Maria Knezevich, vanished in Spain earlier this year. Prosecutors have piled on charges of kidnapping resulting in death, foreign domestic violence resulting in death, and foreign murder of a U.S. national, according to Local10.
Detailed in a new grand jury indictment obtained by NBC Miami, authorities accuse Knezevich of traveling from Miami-Dade to Madrid with the intent to harm his wife, Ana Maria Henao Knezevich. The indictment alleges that he "did willfully and unlawfully seize, confine, kidnap, abduct, and carry away" his wife and subsequently killed her. Ana Maria had reportedly moved to Madrid in December amidst a separation from Knezevich.
Evidence playing a central role in the case has come from new surveillance images and Knezevich's supposed activities that preceded Ana’s disappearance. As reported by Hoodline, Knezevich has been linked to the purchase of spray paint and duct tape in Madrid, and to footage showing someone believed to be him painting over a security camera at Ana's apartment. He has also been connected to a rental car, returned in Serbia with altered features and high mileage, suggesting he made the drive from Serbia to Spain and back.
Despite these accusations, Knezevich's attorney has maintained his client's innocence, claiming Knezevich was in Serbia on the day of Ana's disappearance, 1,600 miles away from Madrid. However, the FBI and Spanish law enforcement have been painstakingly investigating, even scouring wooded areas and waterways for any sign of Ana, "We just hope for justice for my sister, hope we find her soon," Ana's brother, Felipe Henao told WSVN, as obtained by Hoodline. The public has remained concerned for Ana's welfare with these disturbing testimonies of a tumultuous marriage coming to light.
"This is a step in the direction to start to mourn while we continue to search for answers and honor Ana's memory by advocating for her story to be told, and for accountability to prevail," her brother, Diego Henao, said in a statement reported by NBC Miami.
