St. Paul, Minnesota is making a serious investment in the next generation. Yesterday, the city announced the integration of 19 new youth members into city governance through the Youth on Boards initiative. These members will join various city boards and commissions, providing fresh perspectives and youthful insight into the inner workings of local government. This initiative, as detailed by the City of St. Paul, is a collaborative effort involving Saint Paul Parks and Recreation, Right Track, and Sprockets.
Young voices are oft-underrepresented in political decision-making, but St. Paul is changing that narrative. The City Council approved appointments this month, with the mayor expressing his endorsement. "Our young people aren't waiting for the future; they are already defining it," Mayor Melvin Carter stated. "Their experiences provide perspectives essential for a prosperous community."
The initiative isn't just about placing youth in positions of power; it's about equipping them with the knowledge and skills to make impactful decisions. Participants undertook the Youth on Boards Summer Academy, an eight-week paid internship that trained them in essential abilities required for civic leadership roles. Kasia Yang, an appointee to the Labor Standards Advisory Committee, shared her enthusiasm with reporters, saying, "I’m focused and passionate about seeing change within our communities."
The youth members will contribute to a range of boards, including those focused on climate justice, neighborhood safety, and human rights, among others. With 14 previously appointed members already active, these 19 additional appointees promise to amplify the youth presence in city governance. Right Track, a Mayoral initiative, and Sprockets, a citywide network for out-of-school time learning, have been instrumental in this endeavor.
