An incident that began Tuesday morning with a man circling near the downtown Nashville jail concluded after a nearly two-hour standoff. Officers with the Metro Nashville Police Department were alerted after they spotted a suspicious vehicle looping around the facility at approximately 9:30 a.m. and approached to investigate. According to a report by WSMV4, the police asked the man in the vehicle to exit, but he refused to comply.
The situation rapidly escalated as authorities cordoned off the area around Third Avenue North and Gay Street. By 10 a.m., a standoff was fully underway, with negotiations ongoing in an attempt to safely diffuse the situation. Additional details on what motivated the man to circle the jail or his identity were not initially provided. Following the escalation, tactical officers decided to deploy a flash bang to bring the standoff to an end, as confirmed by WKRN.
Following the use of the flash bang device, the man was taken into custody shortly before noon. Metro police assured the public that all jail facilities were secure and there was no further threat to the area. The man, first reported as a suspicious individual circling the block, was apprehended without any report of injuries or additional incidents.
FOX17 provided further confirmation that the incident took place near Second Avenue and Gay Street, a busy section of downtown Nashville. The quick response by the Metro Police's tactical team and the subsequent arrest brought a resolve to what could have otherwise escalated into a more serious confrontation. Specifics regarding charges against the individual or the contents of the negotiations have yet to be released.
