Oak Brook experienced a significant disruption Wednesday afternoon following a police chase that ended in a crash outside Oakbrook Center mall. The incident, which resulted in the apprehension of a burglary and retail theft suspect, began with Oak Brook police being notified by license plate reading technology of a vehicle associated with the crimes. NBC Chicago reported that the pursuit started after the suspect's car was spotted entering the shopping center around 2:35 p.m.
Upon locating the vehicle, officers attempted a traffic stop, only to have the suspect flee westbound on 22nd Street. During the escape attempt, the vehicle crashed into another at the intersection of Route 83 and 22nd Street. At this time, the refusal of the suspect to exit the vehicle prompted an escalated response. According to NBC Chicago, police were forced to shoot a bean bag round to "tactically disable" the vehicle's rear window to gain visibility inside.
As reported by ABC7 Chicago, the standoff that ensued led to the closure of northbound Route 83 while emergency crews attended to the scene. Police eventually were able to apprehend the driver, who was later observed being placed into an ambulance after sustaining injuries from the crash. The vehicle, with its shattered back windshield, stood as a testament to the day's violent unraveling.
While the suspect was whisked away for medical attention, Oak Brook officials maintained a posture of investigative diligence, continuing their work into the evening to lodge the pieces of a crime that had unfolded in broad daylight. In their statement to NBC Chicago, police confirmed "the driver was then taken into custody without further incident," bringing an end, at least temporarily, to what had been a menacing sequence of events.
