Houston police have apprehended and charged a suspect in connection with a homicide that took the life of a man outside a convenience store on De Priest Street back in April. The suspect, 48-year-old Ortazuis Collins, faces charges of murder and being a felon in possession of a firearm. A booking photo of Collins was released in conjunction with the news release of Houston Police Department.
On April 29, at approximately 3:45 a.m., officers responding to the scene discovered 49-year-old Ronnie Hackett with a gunshot wound. Despite efforts to save him, Hackett was pronounced dead after being transported to a local hospital by Houston Fire Department paramedics. Investigations quickly to began to piece together the circumstances of that fateful morning, leading authorities to identify Collins as a key suspect.
According to the original report by the Houston Police Department, HPD Homicide Division Sergeant A. Lopez and Detective N. Sharp took charge of the investigation. The breakthrough came when officers, part of the Gulf Coast Task Force, arrested Collins in Fulshear, Texas, on November 14. With the suspect now in custody, the courts will take the subsequent step to bring the case to a resolution.
Ortazuis Collins is currently being held in the Harris County Jail, awaiting further legal proceedings. The charges against him have been filed in the 230th State District Court.
