Authorities have made a key arrest in connection to the murder of Maria Flores, 37, who was fatally shot on September 4 at an apartment complex on 9430 Concourse Drive. According to the Houston Police Department, a suspect identified as Daniel Vargas Cartagena, 30, faces charges of capital murder following his apprehension by the Texas Department of Public Safety in Karnes County.
Cartagena's arrest follows an investigation by the HPD Homicide Division, who responded to the scene and found Flores unresponsive with multiple gunshot wounds at approximately 11:40 p.m. The Houston Fire Department paramedics pronounced her deceased at the scene. Cartagena was linked to the crime through surveillance footage that showed him walking with Flores shortly before the incident occurred.
In the statement released by the Houston Police Department, Sergeant M. Holbrook and Detective R. Lujan highlighted the key evidence that led to the identification of Cartagena, mentioning that "a preliminary investigation indicated Flores was seen walking with the suspect, described only as a Hispanic male, just prior to the shooting."
With the charges filed in the 337th State District Court, the suspect is currently facing the legal consequences as he awaits extradition back to Harris County.
