A man suspected of involvement in a shooting on the Upper West Side that led subway riders to take cover has been detained, authorities announced. According to NBC New York, a 47-year-old man was hit by gunfire near West 69th Street and Columbus Avenue around 9:15 a.m. yesterday and has been hospitalized and is expected to recover.
Eduardo Diaz, a 42-year-old individual, has been named as the suspect in custody and, as per CBS News, faces charges including attempted murder, assault, and weapon possession. Diaz, who had been an employee of the victim before exiting the position approximately two months ago, was apprehended this morning.
The incident caused chaos as bystanders scrambled for safety, with surveillance footage capturing the panic-stricken moments. Running into the subway after the shooting, the suspect prompted a response involving police helicopters hovering over Central Park and an Office of Emergency Management alert that warned of delays and service changes on multiple subway lines.
Amidst the gunfire, witnesses recounted the terror. "I heard, like, 15 loud bangs," Robert Consivine told CBS News. The aftermath included damaged property like shattered glass at a bus stop and a bullet hole in a nearby apartment door. "You always see stuff on the news. When it's in front of your house, it's different, obviously," remarked one impacted resident.
