A man suspected of gang ties in Venezuela was apprehended at Dolphin Mall in Sweetwater, Florida, after a confrontation with authorities. The individual, Abrahan DeJesus Mavo-Bracho, was reportedly involved in an altercation that led to his arrest on various charges. According to police, Mavo-Bracho, accused of affiliating with the violent Tren de Aragua gang, was detained on Friday night after a theft incident at a Nike store within the mall complex.
The series of events began when a mall patron notified an off-duty officer about a threat from a group of men. The situation escalated when Mavo-Bracho allegedly pushed the officer and attempted to flee the scene. As he tried to escape in a vehicle, he was subdued by another officer using a taser, as stated in the arrest report obtained by NBC Miami. The ensuing investigation uncovered merchandise valued at approximately $1,100, supposedly stolen from the Nike store.
Further complicating the arrest, Sweetwater police indicated that Mavo-Bracho had previously cut off his ankle monitor, violating the conditions of his immigration trial and prompting his fugitive status. His tattoo, suggestive of gang affiliation, was a point of focus during the arrest. "Once he saw that, he saw that that was an identifier, he asked them and he of course claimed that he is not affiliated with it that he just likes the tattoo and that's why he has it on," Sweetwater Police spokesman Alvaro Zabaleta told NBC Miami. However, Zabaleta pointed out that individuals don't typically sport such tattoos without actual connections to the gangs they represent.
Mavo-Bracho is now facing charges of grand theft, battery on an officer, and resisting arrest, and is being held in Miami-Dade County jail with an immigration hold. According to WSVN, local authorities and federal agents coordinated the arrest, reflecting heightened attention on gang activities with international ties. The case could have major implications for ongoing investigations into transnational gangs and strategies targeting fugitives with global warrants.
