In a heartfelt gesture of remembrance, Suwanee has unveiled its new Veterans Memorial named "Greater Good" at the Town Center on Main & DeLay Nature Park. The November 9 dedication saw the community coming together to honor veterans from all branches of the U.S. military, featuring a large-scale sculpture by Michael Szabo as the centerpiece of the memorial, as reported by the City of Suwanee own news release.
Mayor Jimmy Burnette welcomed the crowd which included veterans, their families, and local residents, highlighting the shared commitment and service embodied by the memorial’s six upward-reaching arcs, joined in unity, this element of Szabo's work symbolizes the military's branches, and the water feature at its base offers a tranquil place for reflection. In a statement obtained by Suwanee, renowned for their vibrant performances, the Sweet Georgia Brass Band provided the musical backdrop while the North Gwinnett High School Air Force JROTC, under the guidance of Lt. Col. (Ret.) Sonny Kim, handled the presentation of the colors.
The Scott Hudgens Family Foundation, recognized by Randy Redner for their support, was instrumental in bringing this project to fruition, and the significance of the event was further underscored by Dr. Lee Martin's, a retired U.S. Army Colonel, profound keynote address. According to the City of Suwanee, Assistant City Manager Denise Brinson introduced artist Szabo, who shared his personal journey and inspiration behind the towering memorial.
Nearly 200 commemorative plaques have been installed around the sculptures, offering community members a chance to honor their personal heroes, these tokens ensure that the legacy of the veterans' contributions will not be forgotten. “Greater Good stands as a place for all to come together to reflect, remember, and show our gratitude for those who have given so much," Szabo told Suwanee, encapsulating the memorial's intent.
