Tacoma deputies, who typically aren't wrangling livestock, found themselves in an unusual situation this past Tuesday night when they were called to the McKinley area due to reports of animals on the loose. According to a post on the Pierce County Sheriff's Department blotter, it was around 10:46 pm when our deputies had to unexpectedly step in to ensure highway safety and assist in the containment of the stray horses.

Handling such animals is usually the job of the Mountain and Foothills Detachments, where lassos and ropes are standard tools. Deputies in Tacoma rarely deal with large animals on roads but managed to keep things under control until the owners arrived. "Our job at that point was just to make sure other vehicles didn’t hit the animals as the owners corralled the animals," as per the Pierce County Sheriff's Department.

The deputies successfully returned the horses to their owners, working with them to resolve the situation and keep residents safe. "Even though we needed some help, your deputies still cleared the call with two in custody. Good job y’all!" the Sheriff's Department stated in a blog post. While unusual for Tacoma deputies, it added some variety to their public safety duties.
