Tacoma residents faced unwelcome news when the Hylebos Bridge, a vital link off East 11th Street in the Tacoma Tideflats, was declared shut for car and truck traffic due to a technical breakdown. The closure came to light in an announcement released on November 27, confirmed by the City of Tacoma’s Public Works Engineering Division, which is coordinating with an external contracting crew to identify a fix for the malfunction while the bridge's accessibility to shipping vessels stays uninterrupted.
The malfunction prompting the closure has not been fully disclosed to the public; however, the bridge’s role in the daily commutes of many can't be understated, and its closure is causing disruptions. The need for repairs came abruptly, leaving the City to work against the clock to restore full functionality, according to information available on the City of Tacoma's news page.
Additional information will be shared on the City’s social media platforms as it becomes available, as per the City of Tacoma. Community members with questions or concerns can reach out to Project Supervisor Steve Carstens at [email protected] or (253) 591-5263.
