Tampa Police have taken a man into custody linked to a fatal shooting that shocked a local neighborhood this week. Derrick Smith, a 30-year-old black male with a birth date of January 3, 1994, was arrested on murder charges after a 32-year-old man was found dead from gunshot wounds on Thursday afternoon. The incident took place in the 1000 block of Century Park Drive, as mentioned in a report by the Tampa Police.
Upon their arrival at the scene, authorities discovered the victim, another black male, now confirmed to have not been armed. Witnesses have shared with police that they heard gunfire and observed Smith shoot the victim multiple times before fleeing. These reports appear to swiftly contradict Smith's initial claims of self-defense, and it has been noted that there was no close proximity confrontation prior to the shooting, with the victim having not approached any closer than roughly three feet from Smith.
Both men were acquainted through their work on post-hurricane cleanup efforts, yet the motive behind this violent encounter remains under investigation. "This senseless act has taken the life of a young man, and our thoughts are with his loved ones as they navigate this difficult time," Tampa Police Chief Lee Bercaw provided in a statement on the City of Tampa website.
Furthering their investigation, detectives were able to retrieve the firearm from Smith's vehicle, an element that is now integral to the case as it moves forward. Smith was arrested and has been charged with murder, currently being held at the Orient Road Jail. With ongoing efforts to provide justice for the victim, the Tampa Police Department reiterates their commitment "to ensuring that he is held accountable for his actions."
