Tampa Mayor Jane Castor will join the Sidewalk Stompers at Adum K-8 Magnet School tomorrow to celebrate the rescheduled National Walk/Bike to School Day. The event, originally planned for October 9, was delayed due to hurricanes.
According to an announcement on the Tampa government website, Emily Hinsdale, President of Sidewalk Stompers, stressed the importance of the day, saying, "National Walk to School Day recognizes the importance of giving children safe and healthy routes to school." She added that keeping kids active in their community benefits not only their health but the city's health as well. Mayor Castor supported this message, stating that ensuring children’s safety on their way to school is always a priority.
Adum K-8, which opened on August 12, serves 1,100 students. To enhance safety, multiple organizations, including Sidewalk Stompers, the City of Tampa’s Mobility Department, and others, have worked together to improve crosswalks, signage, and roads around the school, addressing safety concerns for students.
Hillsborough County set a new participation record with 39 district schools registered for the event. Despite hurricane delays, 17 schools rescheduled to join in. Sidewalk Stompers, an advocacy nonprofit founded in 2018, partners with 18 local schools and currently reaches over 2,000 students through their Walk to School programs.
