A Taylor man sustained severe injuries following a collision with a semi-truck on I-275. The crash, which took place near Tyler Road on the southbound side of the freeway around 10:45 a.m. yesterday, involved a 34-year-old man driving a Mercedes Sprinter van who failed to adjust his speed to the slowing traffic ahead, Michigan State Police Second District said in a statement, as per WWJ Newsradio.
The incident caused the man to rear-end the semi and subsequently strike the van's windshield, leading to extensive leg injuries. According to MLive, responding units from the Van Buren Fire Department had to extricate the injured driver from his vehicle before transporting him to a local hospital for medical attention. The condition of the van driver has not yet been released.
The driver of the semi-truck was not mentioned in the reports. State Police suggested that the van driver's attention may have been elsewhere during the moments leading up to the crash. "It is important for drivers to remember that once they get behind the wheel they only have one job. Just drive," First Lieutenant Mike Shaw stated, as per MLive.
Following the accident, authorities temporarily closed the right two lanes of the highway to properly investigate the scene. No further details have been provided about the ongoing investigation.
