In the early hours after Thanksgiving, when many are still nestled in the comfort of holiday respite, a Greenacres family faced an urgent crisis as their home was engulfed in flames. At the heart of the ordeal was 13-year-old Valerie Morales, who's quick thinking and swift action managed to swiftly save her family from what could have been a devastating disaster. According to CBS12, it was around 10 a.m. that the young girl noticed their porch light switch off, only to find their home filled with smoke as their family slept.
"My first instinct was, of course, to get everyone out of the house. And then I was still scared," Valerie told CBS12. Braving the smoke, she awakened her parents, her uncle, and her 8-year-old sister, ensuring that they quickly evacuated the residence. Valerie also recalled her pet-sitting responsibility for a neighbor's bunny, bravely returning into the dangerous environment to to successfully rescue the animal.
The sharp response from the young girl was pivotal, as WPTV reported, her actions took place before the local fire services arrived on the scene to subdue the blaze. Greenacres Fire Rescue indicated that a faulty electrical wire was likely the cause of the fire that left the Morales home unlivable, according to WPTV. While the family managed to escape physical harm, Valerie and her sister were treated on-site for potential smoke inhalation.
The community, along with emergency organizations, have stepped in to support the family. The American Red Cross has provided emergency financial assistance along with health and mental health services, committed to meeting the disaster-induced needs of the Morales family. "The material stuff we could, like, worry about that later, but right now, I just want, like, a house. Material stuff you still buy back, but your life you can't. So I'm just, like, thankful," Valerie expressed to CBS12, showcasing a grounded perspective on the value of life over possessions.
