Two endangered nēnē birds have been killed by traffic in Maui. The incidents occurred on a Sunday, with one bird struck after being fed by humans in a vehicle on Amala Place in Kahului. Another bird was hit near the airport's air cargo bypass, according to the Department of Land and Natural Resources.
The Department of Land and Natural Resources reminded the public of the critical role nēnē play in Hawaii’s ecosystem. As the state bird, they are especially vulnerable during this time of year, as they form pairs and search for nesting grounds, requiring more space to take flight due to their size.
While spotting nēnē on the road can be a rare treat, it comes with the responsibility for drivers to slow down and stay alert. The DLNR’s Division of Forestry and Wildlife (DOFAW) emphasized that feeding nēnē is illegal and dangerous, urging people to support conservation efforts by acting responsibly.
The Department of Land and Natural Resources is calling on Hawai‘i’s drivers to stay vigilant and reduce their speed to protect these native birds.
